Firearms: Calibers and Importation

Calibers We wish not to get into a debate as to which specific caliber you should bring. Our experience is that you should bring along the largest caliber rifle that you feel comfortable with. It is highly recommended that you invest in premium grade bullets only. Do not bring inferior bullets that will absolutely destroy a great hunting trip with bad memories of wounded animals that were lost due to bad ammunition. The most commonly used rifles are anything from the 7mm Mag to the 30-06 and anything in between. Depending on the animals you are interested in, you may consider bringing along a flat shooting caliber for open plains, and a heavier caliber for the bush regions. For dangerous game our law requires a minimum caliber of 375.

For bird hunters a 12ga shotgun is advisable and you should consider buying your ammunition here to save on luggage weight. Ammunition for other gauges is not always readily available.

You are permitted to bring into the country a total number of 60 rounds of ammunition per caliber.
