Hunting notes when hunting caracal

Hunting a wily caracal that has been shot at before, or was missed in a gin-trap is as difficult to hunt as leopard. The caracal (also known as the lynx) is a villain in sheep farming country. It occurs over a wide area in South Africa and is on the most wanted list of farmers, together with jackal when it comes to stock farming, and more specifically sheep farming.

Hunting the caracal is usually coming across it by accident, or waiting for it to return to it’s kill. They have a habit of covering their prey with plant matter disguising it from other predators. Calling with predator callers can not only attract the caracal, but also jackal, leopard and African wild cat amongst others.

The best suggested caliber to hunt caracal with is a 375 with a solid bullet. However, from a 222 and up will be equally as good.

The average shooting distance when hunting the caracal is between 30 and 50 yards, unless found in an open field.

Description:

It is the only specie under it’s unique genus. The closest relatives would be the Lynx of Mexico, Canada, Europe and Asia. The most striking feature is the black tipped ears, each with it’s own bushy hair tips.

Habitat:

Caracal is not habitat specific and can adapt adequately to a variety of areas. Equatorial rain forests are avoided. Habitat is mainly measured along the lines of the availability of prey and they are partial towards open savannah tree areas.
