Hunting notes when hunting lioness:

Hunting lioness is traditionally done in the same manner as that of her male counterpart, in one of two ways:

One – by baiting. Bait is set up in much the similar fashion to that of leopard, excepting that the bait is not all the way up in a tree to make it accessible to the lion. Drags are created and a blind / hide is built soon as the lion starts feeding.

Two – walk-and-stalk. Soon as fresh tracks are found, the hunt is on. The tracks are easily lost on hard ground. During the midday heat the hunter can expect to find lion in a shady spot.

Even being a female, a lioness is equally as, or even more dangerous than a lion. Males are much larger than females, but if a lion or lioness kills a hunter, the hunter is equally dead. Buffalo cows and elephant cows are known as the “bitches of the bushveld”. There is a reason behind such profanity!

Track size usually indicates sex, however, young male tracks are readily confused with lioness tracks.

The best recommended caliber to hunt lion with is the 375 and up. We prefer any caliber from 400 and up.

The average shooting distance when hunting lion is 40 – 60 yards.

Description

After a gestation period of 110 days the lioness will give birth to a litter of 2 – 6 cubs. Cubs are allowed to feed from any lactating female.
