Areas and hunting camps
The hunting camps will consist of luxurious single or double rooms. You will sleep in comfortable surroundings and have en-suite bathroom facilities. Laundry will be done on a daily basis and returned to your room before the end of the day. On the odd occasion adverse weather can effect delivery time of your laundry to the following day.

Formerly known as the Orange Free State, the Free State offers open plains game hunting for a variety of animals. Some of these animals (vaal rhebuck) are found nowhere else in the world and offers challenging hunting on the prairies and in the incredible sand stone mountains along the eastern side of the province.

One of the many great battles (Surrender Hill: a battle we as South Africans would sooner want to forget!) between the Boers (South Africans) and the British Empire was fought in the region during the Anglo Boer War (1899 – 1902). The term boer is an Afrikaans word that literally means farmer. Rolling hills covered in grassland to sheer beautiful mountains make for spectacular scenery. Water levels from a previous age left clear color formations on the sandstone mountains. Many of the outcrops would remind of the buttes found in certain parts of the USA.

Blesbuck, mountain reedbuck, springbuck, vaal rhebuck and black wildebeest (to name but a few) abound in this region. Excellent bird hunting is to be had on the open plains and in corn fields. The odd trout can be had on a fly in some stocked ponds or in the local creeks. The altitude along the Maluti Mountain Range exceeds 7 000 ft and is frequently snow capped in winter. The Maluti Mountains are also a physical international boundary between South Africa and the land locked Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho. Lesotho is recognized as an independent country with it’s own government and a passport is required for an official visit.

Hunting the Free State with Hunting in Africa

The Free State derives it’s name from the early European pioneers moving away from the British in the Cape Colony (1828 onwards) due to the British having the gaul to abolish slavery. The pioneers were looking for a free state, away from British rule and influence. The orange part was derived from crossing the Orange River which formed the southern boundary of the newly proclaimed Orange Free State.
