Bow hunting Africa
Hunting in Africa – where a bow hunting blind is our home away from home!
Bow hunting Africa is becoming increasingly popular as a hunting method due to the variety of game available on a single hunting concession. Secondary to the 39 huntable game species, a bow does not require a number of import procedures, documentation and associated issues to have to comply with when bringing your bow on an Africa hunting safari.
South Africa became fully aware of bow hunting and bow hunters with the introduction of draconic legislation a number of years ago (2000 in fact) that limited ownership of firearms. This allowed for alternative hunting methods being investigated by local hunters, one such method being bow hunting and the other being black powder muzzle loader hunting. Between the two, bow hunting will most likely survive longer as the law now requires black powder rifle owners to be in possession of valid licences whereas bow hunters require no licensing system.
All our bow hunting is conducted from pit blinds, ground hides, elevated hides and sometimes even walk-and-stalk. Your level of skill and preference will determine the hunting method.
Hunting any of the Big 5 with a bow has some minimum requirements with regards to the draw weight of the bow you intend to use, as is the case with the arrow. The two pachyderms, elephant and rhino, may not be bow hunted in South Africa. New legislation requires a permit to be issued prior to the commencement of the hunt on buffalo with a bow: please enquire as to our special offer on hunting cape buffalo with a bow on a walk-and-stalk basis in South Africa for the 2012 season.
The first bow hunter to book a walk-and-stalk trophy buffalo bull hunt for 2012 will get a 7-day South African bow hunt at $400 per day and a trophy fee of $ 8 950. No guarantee on trophy size but will be 36″ or bigger (no size penalty even if the bull exceeds 40″). 12 000 acres. Terms and conditions apply.
It is recommended that you bring along a suitable video camera and tripod when hunting from a blind. There will be many exciting opportunities for video taping a variety of animals, including you harvesting the trophy you have thought about for so long.
Above: A constructed blind at 23 yards from the target area. This spacious blind has ample overhead space ensuring that the bow does not touch the roof prior to making a perfect shot.
All our bow hunts are conducted on concessions where only bow hunting is permitted. You are permitted to harvest animals outside of your package deal at the relevant prices.

Requirements to hunt the Big 5 with a bow:
In South Africa it is no longer legal to hunt pachyderms (thick skinned animals) like the African elephant and the rhino with a bow. Previously the hunter had to use a bow with a minimum draw weight of 90 lbs to hunt elephant and rhino.
In some of the provinces we have to apply for a permit to hunt the Cape buffalo with a bow, but it can be done. It is permissible to hunt lion with a bow, while some provinces do not allow leopard hunting with a bow.
Please enquire about the specific animal you would like to hunt with a bow in South Africa.
It is allowed (permissible) to hunt all plains game in South Africa with a bow.
Zimbabwe
Four of the Big 5 may be hunted with a bow in Zimbabwe. With the exception of rhino, elephant, Cape buffalo, lion and leopard may be hunted with the bow. It is recommended that bow hunting any of the soft skinned members of the Big 5 (lion, leopard, and Cape buffalo) be done with a minimum draw weight of 80 lbs. For hunting elephant we recommend a draw weight of at least 90 lbs.
