Trophy hunting a white rhino in Africa

Notes:

Neither the white rhino, nor the black rhino derive their names from body color. The early Dutch settlers named the white rhino as “wijd”, meaning wide, but when pronounced, sounded to the British like “white” (from the Dutch word “wit”). Therefore the rhino became known as the white rhino.
The early European settlers moving to the central Southern African regions came across another rhino and named it the “black” rhino.
Other myths include that the horn, when ground to a powder, possesses aphrodisiacal powers. This is, to say the least, not true.

Some differences between the white- and black rhino are:
White rhino is 30 – 40% larger than the black rhino. White rhino has a square lip, and the black rhino has a hooked lip. The white rhino is strictly a grazer, and the black is a browser. Due to the difference in habitat, the calf of the white rhino mostly walks in front of the cow, and vice versa with the black rhino.

Hunting notes:

This is an exhilarating hunt. According to most laws a minimum caliber of 375 is required to hunt the rhino, however, it is our experience that calibers larger than 400 always perform better on these pachyderms. Remember to use premium grade ammunition only as your life could depend on it.

Rhino (white) do not have very good eye sight at all, but are particularly blessed with good hearing and smelling abilities. Stalking the rhino is a slow and tedious affair, bearing in mind that it can hear well. With a slight breeze in favor of the hunter, the rhino can be approached to within shooting distance. If charged, refrain from attempting a brain shot as the horn could be in the way and your shot could ricochet. Rather attempt a spine shot.

The best recommended caliber for hunting white rhino is as large as you feel comfortable handling, larger than 400 cal.

The average shooting distance when hunting rhino is between 10 – 30 yards.

Rhino may not be hunted in Zimbabwe.
