Origin of the name: Victoria Falls

David Livingstone was born on 19 March 1813, second child of seven to a working class family in Blantyre, Scotland. At the age of 10 David started working at the mill that employed his father. Apart from receiving schooling by the milling company in the evenings, David taught himself Latin and developed a love for the natural history.

At the age of 19 David was promoted saving the increased wages to later enrol himself at a medical school in Glasgow (Scotland). Two years after that he decided to spend a year at the London Missionary Society.

By 1840 he moved to London to complete his medical studies where he qualified as a physician. In December of that same year he was ordained as a missionary by the London Missionary Society and set sail for South Africa. Upon arrival in South Africa he left for a town by the name of Kuruman in the harsh North western semi desert parts of the country to commence work as a missionary doctor. From 1841 until his death in 1873 he explored the central parts of southern Africa.

Initially he was concerned with spreading Christianity to the local tribes he came across but later on his interest was diverted to mainly exploring the great Zambezi River and it’s tributaries. Later still he wanted to establish the source of the Nile River.

David Livingstone was one of the very first missionary doctors to make his way to southern Africa, often being the first white man to meet local tribes. One of the reasons why he was soon trusted by the inhabitants of the villages he visited was because of his skills in obstetrics, the surgical removal of tumors and ophthalmology. Due to being overworked it soon became imperative for Livingstone to limit his services to the seriously ill only.

In a number of his journals and letters Livingstone started mentioning in 1865 about the possible relationship between mosquitoes and malaria: “Myriads of mosquitoes” he wrote “showed, as probably they always do, the presence of malaria”. Livingstone was one of the first doctors to prescribe quinine in a dosage that was effective, clearly supported by the fact that his exploration parties showed a higher rate of survival than other parties.

David only returned to Great Britain twice during his whole stay in Africa. Even prior to his death when he was plagued by a number of diseases he still refused to return to his birth country. He eventually died in Africa in 1873 whereupon his body was returned to Britain for burial at Westminster Abbey.

During 1851 on one of his many adventures he became aware of the existence of a mighty great water fall, referred to as Mosi-oa-Tunya, by the local tribespeople, meaning “The smoke that thunders”

It was not until 1855 that he followed the Zambezi on foot and later boarded a canoe from where he landed on an island above the Victoria Falls as we know it today. From there he got his first look at the magnatude of the falls, writing in his journal:

“Creeping with awe to the verge I peered down into the large rent which had been made from bank to bank of the broad Zambezi, and saw that a stream of a thousand yards broad leaped down a hundred feet and then became suddenly compressed into a space of fifteen to twenty yards. The most wonderful sight I have witnessed in Africa”.

The name David Livingstone decided to bestow on the “most wonderful sight” was in honor of his queen, Queen Victoria. Hence the name: Victoria Falls.

There are many tourist-related activities in- and around Victoria Falls. Apart from the hunting concessions close to town, bungee jumping, white water rafting , walking with lions and other related activities can be experienced.
